사공보다 많은 산

배가 산으로 가는 것은 물이라는 종속되어 있던 곳을 넘어서는 일입니다. 땅을 디디고 더 높이 오르는 범주의 확장입니다. 우리 각자가 예술과 일상을 통해 이루고자 하던 일입니다. 문제는 사공의 많음 보다는 사공들이 탄 배의 유일함입니다. 하나의 배에 많은 사공이 타 이리저리 표류하듯 오르게 된 것입니다. 모두의 결과이지만 그 누구의 의지에도 기인하지 않게 되는 일입니다.
강원작가트리엔날레2022의 주제는 <사공보다 많은 산 (Hundreds of Boats, Thousands of Mountains)>입니다. 본 전시는 각자의 배가 각자의 이야기를 담아 각자의 산으로 가는 것을 지지하고 응원하는 태도로 부터 시작합니다. 하나의 배에 모든 사공들이 타서 유일한 산에 멈추게 하는 것이 아니라 사공들 각자가 노를 저어 저마다의 산에 도착하거나 스스로가 산이 되도록합니다. 강원의 높은 예술적 성취는 이미 산입니다. 이에 더해 오늘의 시도들이 산이 될 수 있도록 돕고 강원 주민의 일상의 이어짐도 예술로 발견하여 엄연한 산이 되도록 합니다. 그리고 이 산들을 이어내 예술의 고원이 되게합니다.
본 전시는 강원의 작가를 발견하고 그 작품을 조명하는 동시에 이를 통해 강원을 다시 발견하는 틀을 제공합니다. 그 틀은 하나의 대상으로서의 산을 '산 - 산들 / 산 - 조각들'로 인식하는 두 방식을 교차하여 만들어 집니다.
큰 산 혹은 산맥으로 인식되는 것으로부터 작은 산들 그리고 연속으로부터 하나하나의 개체를 주목합니다. 물질과 물질을 이루는 분자들의 관계와 같이 전체와 그 구성요소가 동질함을 전제로하는 인식입니다. 이러한 인식을 통해 <개체> - <개체들> 사이의 순환과 연결을 발견하고 <주체> - <대상들>의 관계를 찾습니다. 자연을 이루는 하나의 개체에서 이들이 속한 생태와 이어지는 맥락, 일상의 장면들로 구성된 또 다른 일상을 통해 지역 - 강원 - 세계의 동질성을 찾고 큰 산이 당면한 문제의 답을 산들의 이야기로부터 영감받습니다.
산을 이루고 있는 무수히 많은 부분들과 그 유일함들에 대에 이야기합니다. 물질을 이루고 있는 요소들의 각각이 독자성을 가지고 있음을 전제로하는 인식입니다. <개체> - <부분들>의 관계를 탐구하고 요소들로부터 개체에 종속되지 않는 깊이와 유일함들을 발견합니다. 자연과 일상의 찰나, 순간, 지금을 포착하고 세계 - 강원 - 지역의 차이를 이야기합니다. 맥락을 구성하고 있는 너무나도 많은 고유함들의 사이를 누비는 경험을 나눕니다.
이번 전시를 위한 공간은 사이-유휴 공간입니다. 축제와 행사를 통해 지역의 일상이 간간이 채워지지만 공간이 가지고 있던 쓰임의 기억과 그 사이의 시간은 유휴상태입니다. 행사장 내 어린이 실내 낚시터, (구)게이트볼장, 종합공연체험장으로부터 본래 쓰임의 기억을 찾아 POOL, GATE, HALL 이라는 이름을 부여하고 퍼지던 물결의 기억, 흐름을 만들고 따라 흐르던 기억, 연결되고 이어지던 기억들로부터 공간을 두드립니다. 이러한 두드림은 지역의 여러 공간으로 확산되어 지역전통시장을 포함한 TOWN, 파빌리온과 조각공원으로 구성된 PARK, 평창연구 아카이빙, 아트-밭, 체험프로그램으로 구성된 BATT으로 이어집니다. 이렇게 두드려진 공간에 발견되고 재인식된 강원의 이야기가 채워져 지역을 깨웁니다. 예술과 일상, 주민과 관람객, 지역과 지역이 '조각들 - 산 - 산들'이 되어 잔치를 이룹니다.
오르기도 전에 오를 필요도 없이
우리는 이미 모두가 산입니다.

*Korean proverbial kindred meaning of the idiom: ‘Too many cooks spoil the broth’ For a boat to go up a mountain is to transcend the water that it is subordinate to. It is to climb higher and expand its territory with land as its foothold. This is what each of us wants to achieve through art and life. So, the problem with this proverbial boat is not that it had too many sailors but that it was the only boat. It is because multiple sailors occupied one boat that the boat driftingly ended up on the mountain. While the result was made by all, it cannot be attributed to any one intent.
The theme of Gangwon Artists Triennale 2022 is “Hundreds of Boats, Thousands of Mountains.” This exhibition stems from a stance that encourages each artist to load their own boat with a story and take it up their own mountains. Rather than all the sailors occupying one boat to park it up on the only mountain, it encourages each sailor to drive their own boat up their own mountain, or if not, become a mountain themselves. Gangwon’s high artistic achievement is already mountainous. This exhibition seeks to add to the legacy by helping artists build what are mere attempts today into mountainous results and to artistically rediscover Gangwon’s resident life with mountains as a theme. Ultimately, it seeks to draw connections among the mountains formed in the process to create a highland of art.
While discovering artists of Gangwon and highlighting their works, this exhibition simultaneously establishes a new frame for the province by intersecting two modes of perception: one that sees the subject of the mountain as an aggregation of multiple small mountains and another that sees it as a mixture of diverse components.
3-A Mountains that Make up a Mountain
The exhibition begins with what is perceived as a large mountain or a mountain range then zooms into the individual entities that make up the larger sequence. This perceptive method is based on the premise that the whole and its components are homogeneous as demonstrated by the relationship between a matter and its molecules. This method allows us to discover the cyclical connection between an entity and its compositional elements and identify the relationship between a principal-agent and its subjects. The exhibition begins with a single entity that composes nature, delves into its ecological environment and extensive contexts, identifies the homogeneity between the regional environment, Gangwon, and the world by compiling scenes from everyday life into another form of daily life, and attempts to find solutions to the problems faced by the larger mountain with inspirations from the stories told by mountains.
3-B The Mountain and Its Components
The exhibition talks about the countless components of a mountain and their one-of-a-kind nature. The perception it proposes posits each compositional element as unique. It explores the relationship between an entity and its component parts and discovers the kind of depth and uniqueness harbored by the elements that refuse to be subordinate to the entity. It captures nature, moments of everyday life, and the present moment to distinguish the boundaries of the world, Gangwon, and the region in general, and ultimately, it shares with the audiences the experience of navigating through the innumerable uniquenesses that make up the larger context.
The exhibition venue is an in-between/idle space. While the space is sporadically occupied by local festivals and events, its utility and memory remain idle in between. The children’s indoor fishing pool, gateball court, and performance hall inside the venue were each given the names “POOL,” “GATE,” and “HALL” in memory of their original purpose. The memories of the rippling pool, the gates and poles that created flows, and the performances that burgeoned connections gently knock on the space. This gentle knock then resonates across other spaces in the region, including the “TOWN,” where the local traditional market is, the “PARK,” comprised of a pavilion and a sculpture park, and “BATT,” consisting of a research archive on Pyeongchang, an art-batt, and a hands-on program. Through the knock, the spaces are filled with newly discovered and reperceived stories of Gangwon to awaken the whole region. Art, life, residents, visitors, and the local environment in turn become components, mountains, and a bigger mountain to create a feast.
Even before we hike, and hence, needless to hike, each of us is already a mountain in and of ourselves.
