평창연구프로젝트와 평창연구아카이빙전: 밭 그리고 상호교환적인
강원작가트리엔날레2022는 평창에서의 트리엔날레 1년차 행사이다. 평창의 지역성을 제대로 파악하기 위해, 예술가와 연구자는 트리엔날레를 준비하는 여름 동안 리서치 협업을 수행했다.
평창연구프로젝트 1차 연구에서는, 이현지와 김중원이 평창 진부 일대를 답사하며, ‘밭’을 진부의 특이성을 가진 단어로 선정했다. 김중원은 사진가로서 진부지역의 밭을 시각성으로 발견하고, 이현지는 ‘항상 특정 동네의 지역인들의 실천을 통해 드러나는 지역성’으로서 밭을 추출했다. 2차 연구에서 이윤섭, 최휘원 작가는 진부 주민들을 조명하며 진부 일대 밭의 지형을 영상과 사진으로 촬영하며 기록했는데, 특히 이윤섭은 평생 밭과 함께해온 사람들의 이야기를 이미지로 도큐먼트했다. 3차 연구에서 유영이와 임시온은, 평창의 밭을 탐험하기 위해 더 넓은 시각으로 확장했다. 유영이는 우리가 밭을 자연의 풍경이라고 알고 있지만, 어떻게 보면 지역민들의 일상과 노동으로 만든 인공적인 공간임을 밝혀내며, 평창에서의 밭에 대한 새로운 의미를 밝혀냈다. 임시온은 진부 일대의 밭을 드론 촬영하여, 밭이 ‘스스로 그러하게 생겨난’ 자연의 공간이 아니라, 사람들의 노동으로 만들어진 인공적인 일상의 공간임을 시각화했다.
평창연구아카이빙전은, 평창연구프로젝트를 수행한 연구자와 예술가들 간 아이디어의 교환을 보여주는 상호교환적인 전시이다. 밭에 대한 시각물들은 큐레이터에 의해 어떤 정보 없이 마구 벽면에 부착된다. 캐비넷에 수집된 소장품처럼 관람객들은 평창연구아카이빙전에서 평창에서 채취한 밭의 이미지들에 호기심을 가지고, 그것들 사이에 상관관계를 읽고, 단일한 서사를 넘어서 변화무쌍한 아이디어를 불러일으키는 것을, 전시는 목표로 한다. 즉 계절이 변화면서 밭의 지형과 모습이 바뀌는 것처럼, 관람객은 평창연구아카이빙전을 통해 밭에 대한 각자의 이미지와 아이디어를 얻어 갈 수 있을 것이다.
Pyeongchang Research Project and Pyeongchang Research Archiving Exhibition: “Batt” and “Interactive”
Gangwon Artists Triennale 2022 is a first-year triennale event taking place in Pyeongchang. During preparations for the Triennale this summer, artists and researchers carried out collaborative research to gain a proper understanding of the nature of Pyeongchang’s locality.
Based on their survey of Pyeongchang’s Jinbu area as part of the initial research effort, Hyunji Lee and Kim Jung Won selected “batt” as a word expressing the qualities that make Jinbu distinct. As a photographer, Kim Jung Won perceived Jinbu’s batt as a defining visual aspect; Hyunji Lee drew the idea of a batt from the “regional qualities that constantly emerge through the practices of people in particular neighborhoods.” For the second part of the research, artists Lee Yoon Seop and Choi Hwi Won focused on Jinbu’s people, using the video and photography media to document the topography of its batt. Lee Yoon Seop in particular created images that documented the stories of people who have been closely connected to the batt throughout their lives. For the third part, Yoo Young Yi and Lim Zion adopted a broader perspective to explore batt in Pyeongchang. Yoo Young Yi observed that while we think of batt as part of the natural landscape, they are also artificial spaces in a sense, created through the daily activities and labor of residents. In that sense, she identified new meaning to Pyeongchang’s batt. Lim Zion used drones to photograph batt in the Jinbu area, visualizing the fact that they are not natural spaces that simply “came to be,” but artificial spaces of everyday life created through human labor. Finally, Kim So Jung, the coordinator of Gangwon Artists Triennales 2022, who was born and raised in Pyeongchang, saw the “batt” scenery of Pyeongchang as a point of circulation that fosters life and connected it to her growth.
The Pyeongchang Research Archiving Exhibition is an interactive exhibition showing the exchange of ideas among the researchers and artists who carried out the Pyeongchang Research Project. Visual materials related to batt were placed on the walls at random by curators, who did not provide any information about them. Like the items collected in a cabinet, the images of Pyeongchang’s batt assembled at the exhibition are meant to pique the curiosity of viewers, who identify the relationships among them and come up with ever-changing ideas that go beyond any one narrative. Just as the seasons change, and with them the topography and face of the fields, viewers can draw their own images and ideas about batt from the Pyeongchang Research Archiving Exhibition.

아트-밭
아트-밭은 평창의 일상공간이자 조형공간인 밭을 전시공간으로 구현한다. 아트(피셜)-밭은 인공밭을 조성하여 예술을 가꾸는 공간이다. 강원의 미래 작가인 강원대와 강릉원주대 학생들의 작품을 미래로 키운다.
이은실 작가는 평창의 밭에서 나는 농작물 무와 배추를 선정해 일러스트로 작업하고, 평창 고유의 지역성을 보여주는 프로젝트로서 아트-밭에 대한 공간을 기획한다. 아트-밭에는 흙이 채워지고 무와 배추가 심어지며 밭이랑의 캔버스를 좌대 삼아 작품이 설치-심어진다.
참여작가는 고홍기, 김은비, 김현우, 박재현, 박휘수, 이수현(강원대학교 6인)과 김영준, 김해민, 박진희, 신정윤, 이대엽, 임동욱(강릉원주대 6인)이다.
Art-Batt
Art-Batt presents batt (batt in Korean), a space for daily life and art in Pyeongchang, as an exhibition space. Art(ificial)-Batt is a place to create an artificial batt where art can grow. Here the works by students from Kangwon National University and Gangneung-Wonju National University, future artists in Gangwon-do, are cultivated for the future.
Artist Lee Eun Sil creates an illustration of Chinese cabbage and daikon, two of the crops grown in the batt in the region, and designs the space for Art-Batt as a project to show Pyeongchang’s unique characteristics. Art-Batt is filled with soil, then daikon and Chinese cabbage are planted there, and works of art are “planted-installed” using plowed rows in the field as pedestals.
Participating artists include Ko Hong Gi, Gim Eun Bi, Kim Hyun Woo, Park Jae Hyun, Park Hwee Soo and Lee Su Hyeon (six artists from Kangwon National University) and Kim Young Joon, Kim Hae Min, Park Jin Hee, Shin Jung Yoon, Lee Dae Youp, Lim Dong Wook (six artists from Gangneung-Wonju National University).
