잇따라 뻗어진 산

강원도하면 많은 사람들은 ‘산’을 떠올릴 것이다. 산들은 각자의 위치에서 솟아나 독립적으로 존재하거나 서로가 연결되어 거대한 하나의 산맥을 이루며 높고 낮음에 따라 우뚝 솟거나 깊은 골을 만든다. 산은 이곳과 저곳으로 지역을 분리하고 경계를 지으며 산과 산 사이 공간을 만든다. 사람들은 그곳에 모여 터전을 일구며 삶을 살아간다. 산은 그곳을 사는 사람들의 기억과 일상이 켜켜이 쌓는 과정을 지켜보며 지역의 세월을 쌓아간다.

강원작가트리엔날레2022의 주제는 ‘사공보다 많은 산’이다. 산은 예술, 사람, 자연, 환경이나 일상, 삶과 같은 다양한 모습과 형태 등을 이르기도 하며 저마다 도달한 경지 또는 지향점이라고 볼 수 있다. 이 산들은 강원도에 뻗은 산맥처럼 서로가 연결된다.

‘잇따라 뻗어진 산’ 전시는 자연과 일상이라는 내용을 담고 있다. 좀 더 살펴보자면 작가의 재해석을 통한 자연, 그에 대한 경이로움, 이상향 그리고 도시개발, 파괴되는 자연환경, 잃어버린 삶의 터전을 어떤 태도로 마주하는지 살펴볼 수 있다. 또 일상과 그 속에서 느끼는 경험, 감정과 성찰 그리고 시대에서 느끼는 인간 소외와 가치, 종교적 위안과 깨달음 등의 내용이다.

전시를 참여하는 작가들은 강원도에서 태어나거나 거주, 활동 등으로 자연스럽게 강원도의 생태를 경험하고 느끼게 되는데 의도하든 의도하지 않았든 작가의 삶과 작업에 영향을 받았다. 작가들은 각자가 속한 지역과 위치에서 동시대의 현상들을 공감하면서도 지역에 대한 고민을 잊지 않고 저마다 독립적인 예술 영역을 구축해 왔다. 전시는 회화, 설치, 조각 미디어 등의 여러 장르의 작품을 통해 강원 작가들만의 고유하고도 다양한 미술을 소개한다.

전시 공간은 여러 산이 만든 강원도의 산맥과 닮았다. 각자의 산이 다르듯 작가의 작품들도 각자의 특색을 지니면서도 큰 줄기로 연결되어 있다. 관람객은 산과 산맥으로 만들어진 공간과 작품 사이를 누비며 작가들이 구축한 예술 공간을 체험할 수 있도록 전시를 구성하였다.

‘잇따라 뻗어진 산’(Hall)의 전시 장소는 기상이변으로 최근 몇 년 동안 열리지 못한 평창송어축제공연장으로, 사람들의 발길이 거의 없는 공간에서 진행된다. 이번 전시로 이곳이 문화 향유의 장으로 기억되길 기대하며 참여 작가, 주민, 관람객 모두가 엄연한 하나의 산으로서 자연과 환경, 일상과 시대의 고민 등을 함께 공유하고 나누며 동시대의 미술 흐름을 경험하는 자리가 될 수 있길 바란다.

The mountains go on

When people think of Gangwon-do, many of them associate the province with mountains. Mountains stand alone in their own positions or link together in vast range; with their rising and falling, they soar to lofty peaks and form deep valleys. Mountains also create spaces in between, drawing boundaries that separate one region from another. People gather at mountains to create a place to live. The mountains stand watch as layers of memories and daily experiences form for the people living there—taking on all the years of that region’s history.

The theme of the Gangwon Artists Triennale 2022 is “Hundreds of Boats, Thousands of Mountains.” These mountains encompass various shapes and forms: art, people, nature, the environment, and daily experience and lives. They may be seen as the orientation or destination to which each of these arrive. Like the chain of mountains that stretches through Gangwon-do, these mountains are interconnected.

The content of the exhibition The mountains go on has to do with nature and daily life. A closer look at the artists’ reinterpretations shows how they view issues of nature (and our feelings of awe toward it), our ideals, urban development, devastated natural environments, and lost ways of life. We find content related to everyday life and the things experienced in it, emotions and introspection, the alienation and values perceived by people in this era, and experiences of religious solace and realization.

The artists taking part in the exhibition have experienced Gangwon’s environment, either as natives of the province or as people naturally exposed to it through their living situation or activities. Intentionally or not, their lives and work have been influenced by it. Even as they connect with contemporary phenomena from the regions and places they occupy, the artists have not forgotten to reflect on their region—and each of them has created their own independent artistic realm in the process. Through work in genres such as painting, installation, sculpture, and media, the exhibition shares the exceptional and diverse art unique to Gangwon’s artists.

The exhibition setting is similar to Gangwon’s mountain chains, which consist of several mountains. Just as each mountain is different, the artist’s works possess their own distinctive qualities even as they are woven together into a single strand. The exhibition is designed so that viewers can experience the artistic spaces created by the artists as they walk among the artworks in a setting made up of mountains and mountain chains.

The mountains go on exhibition venue (hall) is a space that is rarely visited these days: the performance venue for the Pyeongchang Trout Festival, which has not been held for the past several years due to unusual weather patterns. Our hope is that through this exhibition, the site can be remembered as a place for cultural appreciation—a setting for the participating artists, residents, and visitors alike to experience the currents of contemporary art; together they can form a “mountain” themselves as they share in the nature and environment, and questions pertaining to daily life and our times.
