사공보다 많은 산은 최대한 많은 사공들을 불러 모은다. 평창, 주민, 일상, 예술로부터 다양한 사공들을 불러 모아 함께 있음을 확인하는 자리이다. 그러나 사공들을 바다로 향하게 하는 어느 목적점으로 이끌지 않는다. 오히려 현재 사공들이 있는 그 자리의 일상과 예술이 있는 ‘산’에 대한 이야기를 하는 전시이다.

전시는 지역주민들의 일상 공간 위에 세워진다. GATE 공간은 지역주민들의 화합과 여가생활을 위한 게이트볼장이었다. 주민들이 게이트볼을 즐겼던 마당 위에서, 사공보다 많은 산은 예술의 이야기를 세워 올려 전시한다. 전시는 다양한 강원 작가들과 함께한다. 다양함이란, 나이·성별·매체와 상관없이 자연과 일상에 대한 고유의 시선을 가진 작가들의 이야기이다. 전시는 하나하나의 작품을, 게이트마다 넘게 한다. 관람객은 작가가 인도하는 배를 타고 도달하여 산에 오른 사공들이 된다.

신철균 작가의 동시대적인 수묵화는, 산을 바라보는 현대적인 관점을 보여준다. 길종갑은 본인이 거주하는 화천의 두류산 풍경을 마술적이고 비현실적으로 묘사하면서도 사실적인 일상의 표현을 생생하게 그려내어, 독창적인 풍경을 선사한다. 박홍순은 산과 강을 다큐멘터리 사진으로 촬영하여, 자연의 광경을 건조한 직면의 풍경으로 전환하여 보여준다. 한선주는 문학적 장치를 차용하여 환상적인 숲의 세계를 그린다. 함명수는 사이프러스 나무를 그렸는데, 사이프러스라는 나무를 식별하는 객관적 인식에서 벗어나, 캔버스 안의 사이프러스를 생동감 있는 드로잉으로 조형적 생명력을 부여한다.

김환은 신체적 한계로 인해 도달할 수 없는 창문 너머의 풍경을 타인의 경험과 본인의 시각으로 재조합하여 그렸고, 황재형은 머리카락을 보온의 조명을 위한 재료로 사용하여, 따스한 시선을 드러낸다. 권용택은 차가운 산과 소박하지만 강인한 강아지풀의 대비로, 인생을 찬미한다. 김슬기는 우리가 일상에서 흔히 보는 골목이지만 개발로 인해 사라져갈 아쉬움을 섬세하게 묘사하여 붙든다. 이수현은 자연과 인간의 관계 고리에 대한 호기심을 불러일으키고, 양재건은 자연과 인간의 형태적 질감을 조각으로 보여준다.

최인선은 화려한 색채와 모호한 형태의 결합으로, 미술로부터 얻는 물질 경험의 감각을 보여준다. 신제남은 7년의 간격을 두고 작업한 그림을 나란히 전시함으로써, 문명에 대한 작가의 생각의 변화를 보여준다. 황하늬는 사북역에서 만난 소녀의 얼굴을 관람객과 마주하게 하여, 차가운 현실을 겪고 사는 우리들에게 따뜻한 니트의 질감을 나눈다. 배요한은 유리로 만든 얼굴들을 설치하여, 다양한 얼굴들이 반사되어 마주보고 중첩되는 모두의 사회를 보여준다. 이승호는 돌을 매고 있는 기린의 형상으로 기꺼이 불안과 짐을 안고 살아가게 되는 시련 그리고 돌파를 보여준다. 콜렉티브 그룹 포이즌 송은, 사진, 설치 그리고 사운드를 결합한 설치 작업으로, 확장된 감각의 경험을 관람객에게 제공한다.

사공보다 많은 산은 예술로서 자연을 인식하는 새로운 시각과 인간에 대한 따뜻한 이해를 말한다. 자연과 일상에서 우리 모두가 가지고 있는 고유의 ‘산’을 연결해 주는 전시이다.

Hundreds of Boats, Thousands of Mountains

Hundreds of Boats, Thousands of Mountains brings together as many boats as possible. It’s a chance to check that all of the boats flocking from Pyeongchang, the local residents, daily life, and art are together. But the boats are not led to a certain destination that will steer them to the sea. Rather, this exhibition depicts the daily life found on the boats and stories about the “mountains” where the art resides.

The exhibition takes place in the local residents’ daily space. For example, the GATE exhibition covers a gateball court where locals used to get together to enjoy some downtime. Hundreds of Boats, Thousands of Mountains constructs and exhibits artists’ stories in the same court where locals played gateball.

The exhibition is joined by a diverse range of artists from Gangwon. Here, diversity applies to the stories of these artists who, regardless of age, gender, or medium, see nature and daily life through their own perspectives. The exhibition displays each artwork at every gate. Meanwhile, visitors board boats steered by the artists and ascend the mountains.

Shin Cheol Kyun’s contemporary ink wash painting offers a modern view of the mountains. Gil Jong Gab presents unique landscapes that combine realistic expressions of daily life with magical and surreal depictions of Duryusan Mountain in Hwacheon, where he resides. Park Hong-Soon captures mountains and rivers in documentary photography, converting beautiful natural scenery into dry, flat landscapes. Han Sun Ju uses literary devices to create a fantastic world of forests. Ham Myung-Su draws cypress trees, not from an objective perspective, but by imparting a formative life force to animated drawings.

Kim Hwan combines his perspectives and other people’s experiences to recompose the scenery that is beyond the window and cannot be reached due to physical limitations. Hwang Jai Hyoung uses hair as a material to create a warm light that represents his tender gaze. Kwon Young Taek exalts life by juxtaposing cold mountains against humble—but resilient—green bristlegrass.

Kim Seul Gi deftly depicts alleys around us that will eventually disappear due to redevelopment. Lee Seung Ho’s sculpture of a giraffe carrying a rock conveys the trials of living with anxiety and burdens and overcoming them. Lee Su Hyun arouses curiosity about the link between nature and humans while Yang Jae Keon expresses the textures of nature and the human form through sculpture. Combining vivid colors and ambiguous forms, Choi In Sun provides a sensory experience of art. Two artworks by Shin Je Nam, which were created seven years apart, show how the artist’s view of civilization has evolved. By making the viewers face the girl she met at Sabuk Station, Hwang Ha Nee shares the warm knit texture with those living through cold reality. Bae Yo Han's installations made with glass faces hanging up high portray face installations made of glass portray a society where diverse faces reflect and blend in with each other. The collective group Poison Song combines photography, installation, and sound in an artwork that heightens the audience’s sensory experience.

Hundreds of Boats, Thousands of Mountains offers a new way of looking at nature through art and a heartfelt understanding of humans. It is an exhibition that connects nature and the unique “mountains” that all of us possess in our daily lives.
