그래피티 인 월정사

월정사 경내 중앙에 그래피티가 그려졌다. 이 작품은 강원작가트리엔날레2022의 사전 프로그램으로서, ‘청소년 그래피티 아트 워크숍’을 통해 제작되었다. 평창 진부 중학교 2학년 학생들과 그래피티 아티스트 제바(유승백) 작가가 지난 여름 동안 함께하여, 청소년들의 자유로운 표현이 벽에 두텁게 중첩되었다. 제바 작가는 이를 토대로 리터칭하여 작품을 완성했다.

작가는 월정사 팔각구층석탑의 가설 보수구조물 외벽 설치를 염두하고, 월정사의 장소를 담았다. 월정사 고악기와 종의 문양, 지혜의 상징인 문수보살, 월정사 전각의 지붕, 팔각구층석탑, 석조보살좌상, 세조 명주적삼 등 월정사의 내용을 평행하게 배열하면서도, 꽃잎, 구름, 태양, 은하수, 오대산과 같은 평창의 자연공간을 더했다. 또한 그래피티적 표현의 레터링을 더해, 평행하지만 깊은 공간감의 입체적인 흐름을 만들어냈다.

평창 청소년들의 참여와 지역 명소가 중첩되면서도, 전통 사찰과 동시대 미술을 평행하게 보여주는 이 작품은, 새로운 풍경을 만들어주는 월정-SCAPE이다.

Graffiti in Woljeongsa Temple

Painted graffiti is at the center of the Woljeongsa Temple compound. This work was created through the “Graffiti Art Workshop for Teens,” a pre-program of the Gangwon Artists Triennale 2022.

During the summer in which second-year middle school students from Jinbu Middle School in Pyeongchang and XEVA (Yoo Seung-Baik), a graffiti artist, spent together, the free expression of the teens thickly covered a wall. By retouching them, XEVA completed their work.

Imagining the installation of a temporary structure for the Octagonal Nine-story Stone Pagoda of Woljeongsa Temple, the artist depicted the landscapes of the temple in the graffiti work. The artist arranged the content of Woljeongsa Temple horizontally, such as designs of a period instrument and bell in Woljeongsa Temple, the Manjushri (a symbol of wisdom), the roof of Woljeongsa Temple, the Octagonal Nine-story Stone Pagoda, the Stone Seated Bodhisattva of Woljeongsa Temple, and King Sejo’s silk jacket, while adding to the work some of the natural elements of Pyeongchang like petals, clouds, the sun, the Milky Way, and Odaesan Mountain. Furthermore, adding graffiti lettering created a deep sense of three-dimensional space.

Showing a traditional temple and contemporary art in parallel through the participation of teens and the introduction of visitor attractions in Pyeongchang, Woljeong-SCAPE is a work that is creating a new landscape.
